Abstract :

Towards better understanding of combustion processes using advanced laser diagnostics

Our dependence on the combustion process is almost total. In the experimental research laser diagnostic plays an indispensable role. Typically used techniques are particle image velocimetry (PIV), planar laser induced florescence (PLIF), and laser induced incandescence (LII). The present talk demonstrates the capabilities of laser diagnostics applied to a series of investigations, such as heat release rate imaging, and investigation of early stages of flame-kernel evolution in laser-induced spark ignited mixture. Finally, application of LII to measure the soot volume fraction is presented along with the extinction based calibration technique. Additionally, a fine-wire thermocouple technique is presented. These examples demonstrate the potential of laser based techniques in combustion as well as in the broader domain of thermo fluids
